Font rendering
March 15, 2005 on 7:33 am | In Computer | No CommentsRecently debian sid changed the configuration for fontconfig. As a result, truetype rendering for a Japanese font “Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro W3″ was affected and the look is unpleasing. I tried several things to fix this, and enabling the autohint option gives me the best quality. Following are the changes I made in /etc/fonts/local.conf.
<match target="font">
<test name="family">
<string>Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro W3</string>
<edit name="autohint">
<bool>true</bool>
</edit>
Tax exemption for foods
March 13, 2005 on 10:54 pm | In Politics | 1 CommentFinally, the State of New Mexico enacted the tax exemption for foods. We just bought groceries at WalMart yesterday, and noticed that the sales tax was only about $0.50 for $30 of items. It seems that Japanese politicians want to pass the legislation to increase the sales tax by 5% in the near future, but it must come with the exemption for foods.
Back from Berkeley
March 12, 2005 on 11:18 am | In General, Research | No CommentsI came back from Berkeley on Thursday evening. The visit to LBL was really valuable to me, and it is so beautiful in the bay area. We even crossed the bay bridge to San Francisco three times during this trip.
MS Natural Keyboard
March 4, 2005 on 3:24 am | In Computer | No CommentsRecently it had been pretty annoying to type keyboard. The noise level when typing is apparently much higher than when it was new, and some keys are harder to press. Since I never had this kind of problem with the last keyboard, I think this is a consequence of MS dropping cost to manufacture keyboards. I tried to find a nice split keyboard, but none of them satisfied me. So, I took a rather rough approach. I bought all-purpose greese at Home Depot and applied it to the cylindrical part of every key with a cotton swab. Even though the greese is really sticky, I could easily imagine that it might drip down to the silicon pads which act as statical swithes, but I couldn’t stand the annoyance anymore. I was bit worried, but the result was astounding! The noise level dropped quite a bit and the feeling is pretty much the same as the last keyboard. It rewarded me so much.
