SSHKeychain

I installed SSHKeychain. It’s a successor to a MacOS X app SSHAgent. You can have a keychain icon in the menubar that can be used to control SSH agent. I think it’s much better than SSHAgent.

Guitar

I went to a guitar shop called grandma’s music and sound with my friend since he wanted to buy an electric guitar. They’ve just moved to a new location, and I was amazed that they have large collection of electric guitars in Albuquerque. The nicest thing about this store is that you can pick guitars and go into the amplifier room to play them. I played a Gibson Les Paul, several Fender Stratocasters, and a Telecaster. I recommended a Fender Highway 1 Stratocaster with maple fingerboard, and he bought it with a Roland amplifier. I think the Highway 1 strat’s pickups are good though they are not noiseless ones.

Wireless Router

I bought a wireless router. The router part was very easy to setup, but it took a while to setup the wireless encryption stuff. First, I tried to use WEP 128bit and entered a passphrase and generated hex keys. But my iBook didn’t like them. So I used WPA personal key and iBook finally recognized the passphrase. I don’t know what’s wrong, but I suspect that iBook’s airport software has some compatibility issue.

udev

I tried to upgrade the kernel of my Linux box to 2.6.2, and after struggling with the KDE kernel configurator (aka. make xconfig) for a while, I found that I should migrate devfs to udev since devfs is deprecated in 2.6 kernels. I searched for the udev debian package, but it’s not in the debian package repository. I know I can go with devfs for a while until the udev package is built, but I would rather wait for the udev package. Other than that, there seems to be no obstacles to migrate to the 2.6 kernels.

It’s free!

A book called “A New Kind of Science” by Stephen Wolfram, the author of Mathematica, has been put on his web site. You can read the entire contents for free. If I recall correctly, he argues that the whole universe can be described by simple computer programs. It’s controversial among computer science researchers, and personally I don’t think he is right, but I need to read at least some of the contents to judge his arguments.

Movie Night

Today’s movie was The Salton Sea. The whole story line is not that bad, but I didn’t like drugs and guns which you can see pretty much everywhere in this movie.

gtkmm

I’ve been writing a prototype software for research, and I’ve chosen gtkmm (C++ binding of GTK+) for the GUI toolkit. There are plenty of documentations, so it’s very comfortable to write code. Right now I write all the GUI code by hand, but will look into glade and glade++ (GUI designer for GTK+) to generate gtkmmm code if it can.
