Panther

I reinstalled Panther because I wasn’t able to mount SMB volumes. I did clean install, and now I can mount both Samba and Windows volumes. As for the new features in Panther, I noticed several things. First, vim is included instead of the original vi. It’s very handy. The performance of X11 seems to be improved. I don’t notice delay when you open a new window. And you can preview PostScript files. I don’t need to use gv to open PS files anymore. When you open a PS file, Preview automatically converts it to a PDF file. After the conversion, I can select or search texts in the PDF file.
But hey, where’s the Ports Collection??? I think Apple mentioned it when they disclosed the new features in Panther months ago. I can’t find any files related to it. Mayby they slipped the release schedule, and hopefully they will put that on the web site when it’s done. For a while I’ll use Fink.

Panther comes!

I received MacOS X 10.3 (aka. Panther) in this afternoon. Immediately I put the CDs in my iBook and upgraded the OS. It went very smoothly. I was impressed that it’s actually faster than 10.2. I can notice the speed up.
