Ports on Panther
July 9, 2003 on 12:52 am | In General | No CommentsAccording to this article at MacMegasite, Ports Collection, a FinkCommander like utility to manage UNIX packages, will be bundled in Panther. It would be really nice that Apple takes UNIX community seriously. I really hope that Ports Collection will have lots of packages so I don’t have to worry about compiling software myself.
Gamma Correction
July 7, 2003 on 5:04 am | In Computer | No CommentsFew days ago, my wife told me how photos look bad on her laptop. I corrected the gamma value, then tried to correct the gamma value on a Linux box, but it turned out to be very difficult to calibrate. First, you don’t know what the video card’s gamma value is. The monitor gamma value is usually described in the manual, but I can’t find the gamma value for my GeForce 3 card. Without this, I can’t calculate the correct gamma correction value. Second problem is the existence of the monitor brightness and contrast controls. Calibrating brightness is easy, because you only need to reduce the brightness until you see black pixel as real black, but how about contrast? I don’t know how to adjust it to the correct contrast value. I’d better look at some nice references on gamma correction.
